What is the Scholarship and how does it work?
The Scholarship is a competition open to all novice drivers. In total, the Scholarship consists of five rounds which run from April to March. Round One is open to absolutely everyone regardless of age, gender and background (see terms and conditions).
The following rounds are by invitation only, based upon the individuals ability and potential. If you make it through the first three rounds and to the Pre-Final and Final, then these are entirely free of charge.
We provide everything you need to participate in the Scholarship, so you don’t need to bring anything with you. Having competed in Round One, you will be contacted within three weeks of whether you have been successful and invited to participate in Round Two.
Every individual is sent a copy of their own assessment sheet after each round and you are welcome to contact call us for further feedback at anytime.
When the first three rounds have been completed, Tim Sugden and all instructors meet to analyse each competitors performance using the assessment sheets.
30 Pre-Finalists are selected to attend an all expenses paid raceday. From this group 10 successful Finalists will reach the final stage of the competition.
Do I require any race experience?
No, because don’t forget this competition is only open to novices and anyone that has competed in more than six car races (on an RACMSA licence) in the last three years would not be eligible. Most Scholarship entries have no experience whatsoever or have participated in the odd Kart race or track day.
The 2005 Scholarship winner had no previous experience of car racing and had only done a small amount of Karting.
Will I be expected to be quick on the first Round?
Round One lays the foundation of Motor racing. At this stage speed is not the most important factor, instead, you will be expected to learn how to drive a car around the circuit and will be taught the fundamentals such as racing lines and braking points.
Are there any age restrictions?
The minimum age is 17, however, there is no maximum age and this has no bearing on the competition at all, indeed no one from bearacingdriver.com will ever ask you for your age.
What does the Scholarship cost?
In total the Scholarship consists of five rounds. The cost of Round One is £190 plus vat (£223.25).
Although there is absolutely no obligation, should you qualify for Rounds Two and Three, the cost is again £223.25. If you make it as far as the Pre-Finals and Final then these are entirely free of charge.
